Crispy Potato Cheese Balls
Description
These crispy potato cheese balls have a crunchy outside, a soft and fluffy potato center, and a warm, melty cheese surprise in every bite. They’re easy to make with simple ingredients and are great for snacking, sharing, or serving as a fun appetizer.
Ingredients
Instructions
- Wash, peel, and cut the potatoes into large chunks. Place them in a pot of salted water and boil until they are completely fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes well and transfer them to a bowl. Let them cool slightly, then mash until completely smooth, making sure there are no large lumps.
- Add the cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until everything is well combined and the mixture comes together into a soft dough.
- Take a small portion of the potato mixture and flatten it slightly in your hand. Place a piece of mozzarella in the center, then gently fold the potato mixture around the cheese and roll it between your palms to form a smooth, bite-sized ball. Repeat with the remaining mixture and cheese, keeping the balls similar in size so they cook evenly.
- Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat until it reaches approximately 350°F. Carefully place the potato balls into the hot oil in small batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry the potato balls, turning occasionally, until they are crisp and golden brown all around.
- Transfer the cooked potato cheese balls to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
- Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce while the outside is crisp and the cheese inside is warm and melty.
Note
• Make sure the potatoes are drained really well after boiling. Excess water can make the potato mixture too soft and difficult to shape.
• Let the potatoes cool slightly before adding the cornstarch and forming the balls. The mixture should be soft but firm enough to hold its shape.
• Mash the potatoes until smooth so the balls are easier to shape and the finished texture is more consistent.
• Keep the mozzarella pieces small so they fit comfortably inside the potato mixture and are fully sealed.
• Make sure there are no gaps or cracks around the cheese before frying. A well-sealed potato layer helps keep the melted cheese inside.
• Keep the potato balls similar in size so they cook evenly and reach a crisp exterior at about the same time.
• Fry in small batches to avoid lowering the oil temperature too much. This helps the outside crisp up instead of becoming greasy.
